Frida Kahlo de Rivera (1907-1954), born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón, was a Mexican painter, who mostly painted self-portraits. She became one of Mexico's greatest painters.

Kahlo contracted polio at the age of 6, had an almost deadly accident at the age of 18, and went on to marry Diego Rivera, the muralist and ultimate womanizer. 

The two had a long and sometimes tortured marriage, but it didn't seem to reflect in the quality of their work. Frida held the record for the highest price paid for a Latin American artwork at auction (Two Nudes in the Forest which sold for $8m in 2016), until a painting by Diego sold at Christie's New York for a record $9.76m (£7.17m) last week.
