The world’s biggest street artist Banksy has announced that he is undertaking a residency on the streets of New York during October 2013 called “Better Out Than In”.  The above artwork was the first installation.  He’s even created a hilarious audio tour which you can listen to by dialing  (800) 656-4271 (this is a USA number for all of you non-USA readers!) or by checking out his instagram account HERE and his website.

We’ll keep you updated as Banksy puts each piece up. Click on “FOLLOW BLOG” on the bottom right of your screen to keep informed!

Here is a great video about Banksy:

Here’s a map of all of Banksy’s pieces put up during his October 2013 New York “residency”. To see it in more detail, go HERE.

UPDATE: October 31, 2013: The final piece for Banksy’s October residency in NYC is in Queens (Greenpoint Ave, 36 Street)! Go check it out before it gets stolen, derided, buffed, abused, vandalised, etc, etc!

October 30, 2013: Location: Yankee Stadium (162 and Jerome Street)

October 29, 2013: Location: 157 E 23rd Street. As we approach the end of Better Out Than In, Banksy throws another curve ball with his new stunt for October 29th. Today’s piece started its life as any old painting at Housing Works Thrift Shop on 157 E 23rd Street – However Banksy clearly saw potential in this painting which led to him purchasing, modifying and returning the piece to its original place of sale. As with much of Banksy’s work, this is a significantly philosophical and political piece, with the Banksy’s modification being the addition of a Nazi officer on a bench in front of a scenic landscape. It’s titled “The banality of the banality of evil “.

The double-whammy of today’s piece is that the auction house, Housing Works, is an AIDS/HIV charity which supports low-income sufferers into homes and with care. We can assume that this is an issue that Banksy purposefully wants to draw attention to and we suspect that all proceeds from the sale of the piece will indeed go towards this good cause. If you’d like to support the cause too, you can donate to Housing Works online here. Housing Works have added it to their online auction platform and you can bid on it by going HERE!

October 28, 2013: Location: Coney Island.

October 27, 2013: Location: Greenpoint. According to Banksy, today’s piece was going to be an op-ed column in the New York Times, but they declined to publish what he supplied. So he stenciled the below sentence.  The unpublished op-ed piece is also below…

October 26, 2013: It’s day 26 and Banksy’s in Sunset Park with an alternative New York bumper slogan. Go find it!

October 25, 2013: Tonight through Sunday, dusk until midnight.  Location: Bowery (Houston and Bowery).

October 22, 2013: Queens. According to Banksy “Everything but the kitchen Sphinx. A 1/36 scale replica of the great Sphinx of Giza made from smashed cinderblocks. You’re advised not to drink the replica Arab spring water.”

October 17, 2013: Location: Bed Stuy (Graham and Cook St)

The above work was defaced pretty quickly. However you shouldn’t mess with Banksy-loving New Yorkers!

It was then faithfully restored:

And now has plexiglass over it to protect it:

October 17, 2013: You’d think the NYPD would have better things to do. Like stopping murderers and drug pushers and stuff… Read all about it HERE.

October 16, 2013: A fibreglass replica of Ronald McDonald having his shoes shined by a real live boy. The sculpture will visit the sidewalk outside a different McDonalds every lunchtime for the next week. Today: South Bronx.

Day 10 Beaver Image: On day 10 of Banksy’s NY Residency, he painted a Beaver Taking Down a No Parking Sign in East New York. Pretty quickly after it was discovered, some enterprising East New Yorkers covered it up with a piece of cardboard and started charging $20 to take a picture. This was filmed by Banksy’s own crew…

UPDATE: October 15, 2013: Location: Tribeca (Staple St, between Jay and Duane).

October 14, 2013: Location: 69th and 38th Avenue, Queens. October 8, 2013: Banksy put this one up on a door in Greenpoint. Don’t bother looking for it though, as the property owner removed the door immediately after it was discovered.  As one observer wrote, Banksy = money.

October 7, 2013: A bandaged red heart balloon showed up on the streets of Brooklyn today. The exact location is Red Hook, on King Street, right off Van Brunt.

And here is the audio guide:

October 6, 2013: Banksy didn’t post any images today. Instead, he posted what has turned out to be a VERY controversial video featuring apparent terrorists and Dumbo the elephant.  Watch it and tell us what you think!

  1. I love Banksy. Would that he took an interest in competition/project (think of it as a project Banksy) to do damage to the tobacco industry- Art Toppling Tobacco (see website).
I particularly liked the one of the children playing ball- hope this one was not removed.
About the voice on the film- it was very nasal so difficult for a hearing impaired person.
